Last weekend I saw a protest. A silent protest. Individuals of all ages rallying together to shout a single message without one word being said.
I was a part of one once. Probably only nine or ten years of age when my church went to the streets of a nearby city – of which I could not even tell you the name – and stood prominently up and down pedestrian crowded pavement to speak poignantly of our protesting stance. We were pro-life. I remember it ever so clearly. A young woman, probably in her thirties, marched vehemently across the street and approached myself and my seven year old friend. She was furious. She obviously came voicing another opinion, and through her rage, we discovered that she had undergone four abortions and her choice to do just that was in no place to be challenged. We didn’t say much. Nor did we know much. Simply what we were taught, which was that abortion was “killing a child.” Although there is a point in a child’s life where the ideology of her parents needs to be molded into personal conviction and understanding. My parents raised me up with the belief that abortion was wrong, but that woman made me realize that they were right. Beyond the rage, I saw in that woman a deep aching that I will not soon forget. Her frustrated cries, which she chose to bring against two elementary-aged girls, bled through the scars forged by her four unborn children. So it is the voice of a child that speaks through this song.
Just a Child
Decisions start with a conversation
And conversations, they start with words
But when those words become tainted whispers
Maybe it’s time you reheard
Listen to me
To the voice of
Just a child
To haunt your memory
Can you hear me speaking to you
Let me breathe the air that you do
Feel me move inside your being
Don’t neglect what you are feeling
I’m alive in you
I’m alive in you
In a moment where heartbeats matter
Every rhythm becomes a prayer
Trembling to the foolish notion
That life might be there
It takes more strength to hear me softly
Than to carry the load I bear
Know the weight of your decision
Could cast despair
Can you hear me speaking to you
Let me breathe the air that you do
Feel me move inside your being
Don’t neglect what you are feeling
I’m alive in you
I’m alive in you
I’m alive in you

The lyrics TOTALLY make sense now!! Not that they didn’t before, but I never made that connection!
